Benefits of Vegetarianism
From LoveToKnow Vegetarian
The myriad health benefits of vegetarianism have been known for centuries. People in ancient Rome touted the strength of a meat-free diet. Traditional diets in areas of Asia and the Mediterranean are nearly wholly vegetarian and these are regularly pointed to as exemplars of good health. Some say more research needs to be done, but others say the evidence is already clear – vegetarianism is the healthy way to go.
The Visible Benefits of Vegetarianism
One of the most obvious benefits of vegetarianism is that, unless you rely exclusively on cheese for your protein needs, you will keep your body mass index down. Simply put, vegetarians who follow a sensible meal plan are thinner than most omnivores – and stay that way even as they age. Along with that, they also prevent a host of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Vegetarians who eat properly and exercise tend to avoid even common illnesses because they maintain an adequate balance of vitamins and minerals from food sources, thus also maintaining a strong immune system.
What you eat is reflected directly in your appearance. Vegetarians often have lustrous hair because they eat fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, walnuts, almonds and sunflower seeds, all of which are important for hair health.
Additionally, vegetarians tend to have clear, vibrant skin because they load up on olive oil, dark leafy greens and flax seeds, while avoiding saturated animal fats that clog the system.
A Long and Young Life
Because vegetarians avoid the sort of foods that can lead to life-shortening diseases, they live, on average, much longer than omnivores. What’s more important, they live healthier lives overall and can remain more youthful. This is in part because the effort required by the body to process animal fats and products depletes you of both nutrients and energy. When you maintain a vegetarian diet, everything you eat does exactly what food is supposed to do: it gives your body energy. Thus, you are rarely too tired to exercise, your work is more productive and your sleep is more restful. Sleeping well is one of the keys to looking and feeling young, as your body does much of its hard work to repair itself while you are at rest.
Vegetarians, especially vegetarian men, also tend to enjoy better sex well into older age. The cholesterol in meat blocks arteries, which results in poor blood flow. If blood is not circulating properly, sexual function is affected. While there is not yet enough research to certify the reports, it’s absolutely worth personal testing.
Fiber and Protein
A diet high in fiber keeps your digestive system in perfect working order. Animal products don’t contain fiber, but all plant-based foods do, so the more animal foods you eat, including eggs and dairy, the less fiber you are allowing yourself. Fiber supplements simply aren’t as healthy, you need fiber from food. An important benefit of vegetarianism is the certainty that you are getting enough fiber and thus keeping your entire system on track. Good digestion also results in a more youthful looking appearance, with clear, smooth skin, lustrous hair, strong nails and a general glow.
Adequate protein, as well as iron, are some common concerns regarding vegetarianism, particularly for children. The truth is that the average American diet tends to include an excess of animal protein. When you confine your protein choices to plant-based products, you reap extra rewards with accompanying vitamins and minerals. One pound of kale, for example, has more protein than a pound of beef, as well as being full of fiber, iron and vitamin C, which helps you absorb that iron. Beans, grains and vegetables all contain protein, and when you combine them, like beans and brown rice, you are getting a full complement of nutrients.
Education and planning will result in a perfect vegetarian diet that can change the balance of your health – permanently.
