Kombucha Mushroom

For hundreds of years, people drank kombucha mushroom or kombucha tea for its restorative qualities. This fermented, slightly sour-tasting drink is made from green or black tea, sugar, and a bacterial culture called kombucha. Other names for kombucha include kombucha mushroom, since the living organisms that make the beverage form a disk or mushroom-shaped colony atop the tea as it ferments.

Many cultures swear by kombucha mushroom tea as a curative drink. Kombucha is said to restore and detoxify the liver, as well as aid digestive complaints. These claims may be founded on scientific fact, since researchers now know that certain bacterial strains help regulate digestion, whereas others can make people sick. Kombucha may in fact aid the delicate balance of intestinal flora by restoring ‘good’ bacteria to the digestive system.

Kombucha

Although kombucha provides many benefits, it should be used with caution. Some people experience stomach upset when drinking kombucha for the first time. Others may be allergic to kombucha.

Some people purchase kombucha starter kits and brew their own kombucha tea at home. While this can be a fine alternative to expensive bottled teas, be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Some people have become sick from drinking improperly prepared home brewed kombucha.

Whether you choose to purchase kombucha online or at the local health food store, buy a kombucha mushroom starter kit, or brew your own at home from a starter given to you by a friend, kombucha has a long history of restorative and medicinal use around the world. And just like the kombucha mushroom top, the taste will grow on you!
