Raw Vegan Recipes

From LoveToKnow Vegetarian

If you’re looking for raw vegan recipes, chances are you may considering the raw food lifestyle or cooking for someone who is a raw foodist. To be considered raw a dish must not be heated to more than 104-120 degrees. This restricts many favorites. For example, you can’t use chocolate, since it is made of roasted cocoa beans.

Raw vegan recipes contain lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

It may seem slightly ironic to find raw food recipes when they are not actually cooked. In fact, many raw foodists have taken to call preparing their meals “uncooking.”

Finding Raw Vegan Recipes

The quickest way to find raw vegan recipes is just to look online. There are several sites that offer them. All you have to do is look. Some of them are:

  • Living-foods.com – This site is completely devoted to the raw food movement. It has recipes for appetizers, entrees, desserts and even drinks, plus an extensive number of sauces.
  • Rawveg.info – This site has a smaller selection of recipes, but some unique and good ones, including several cold soups you can make in the blender.
  • Goneraw.com – This site contains recipes submitted by its visitors, most of whom are raw food enthusiasts. They aren’t sorted by category, but there is a search option available.

Raw Vegan Cookbooks

Another place to find raw recipes is at your local bookstore or library. Some popular raw food cookbooks include:

  • The UNCook Book – Definitely the most famous of the lot, this book is written by Hollywood chef Juliano Brotman.
  • The Raw Food Gourmet – In this book, chef Gabrielle Chavez helps the reader transition from a “normal diet” to a living diet, using recipes to help illustrate the journey.
  • Raw Foods for Busy People – Written for the raw foodist with a hectic family, work or social life, this book provides a good number of recipes that don’t require fancy machines and use common ingredients.
  • Raw Kids – Since it can be hard to get kids to eat anything that’s perceived as different, this book focuses on not only recipes but guiding kids through the transition to raw foods as painlessly as possible.

Simple Raw Recipe

If you have no idea what a raw vegan recipe would look like or just want something easy to try, here is one to get you started. It’s for a traditional gazpacho, which is a cold soup. The ingredients you need are 10 medium tomatoes, half a cucumber, half a green bell pepper, three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, cayenne pepper and minced garlic to taste.

  1. Peel the cucumber and dice it, the tomatoes and the pepper.
  2. Put these vegetables in the blender and set it to high for one minute.
  3. Add the olive oil, cayenne pepper and garlic.
  4. Continue to blend until you have a thin, smooth mixture.
  5. Pour into a dish and garnish as you’d like.

Common raw garnishes are parsley, avocado, flax seeds and green onion. You can refrigerate the soup for up to 48 hours. Just cover it before doing so.

If you plan on making raw vegan recipes on a regular basis, you should definitely invest in both a good blender and a food dehydrator. You will find these two machines provide variety and will let you enjoy things like crackers, breads and chips that are uncooked. You should also keep some raw staples on hand in your kitchen or pantry, including fruits and vegetables, nuts, herbs, spices, vinegar, seaweed and roots such as ginger and beets. A good place to stock up on these items is your local farmer’s market or natural food store. Before switching to raw entirely, you should talk to a doctor or nutritionist.
